What Does an Instagram Data Export Actually Include?
An Instagram data export can contain your photos, messages and other account information, depending on what you select. Here is how to choose the right options and check that the files you wanted are actually there.
It is easy to download an archive, see a folder full of files and assume everything is there. The harder part is finding a particular photo, matching a caption to a video, or spotting a missing carousel item. This guide walks through those checks, with an example you can follow.
Three ways of keeping something from Instagram
Start with the object you want to preserve. A bookmark, a media file and an account record solve different problems. Calling all three a download can hide the difference.
| Method | Useful for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram Save or a collection | Returning to a post inside Instagram | You can find the saved entry in your account. It is not evidence that a separate media file exists on your device. |
| An individual media download | Keeping a particular authorized image or video locally | The file opens and represents the intended item. Captions, comments and account history need separate checks. |
| Your account's data export | Obtaining selected account records and content for review or archiving | The chosen profile, categories, dates and files match your purpose. |
Instagram documents Save as an account feature with a private saved section and collections. Meta's saved-post instructions describe that workflow; they do not establish an offline backup. Our distinction here is about what you can verify locally, not a promise about future access to a bookmarked post.
An export also does not automatically give you other people's originals. Meta says it excludes information someone else shared, such as another person's photos in which you are tagged. A reference to another post and an actual copy of its media are different things. Source: Instagram export documentation.
Record the request settings before judging the result
Meta lists account activity, personal details, connections, logged activity, security/login information, off-Instagram activity, preferences and advertising information among the device-export categories. The categories you select determine the scope you should later check. Source: export categories.
Meta's current help page warns that accounts may show Accounts Center or Meta Account during its transition. Look under Your information and permissions, then Export your information. Create an export for the intended profile and choose the device destination. Confirm categories, date range, format and media quality before starting. Current Meta instructions.
Write down those choices. They are the scope of the request, not administrative details. If you requested one month of photos, a missing older video is not enough to establish a broken export. If several accounts share a settings screen, confirm the profile rather than relying on the email address receiving the notification.
Meta separately distinguishes Available information from Specific types of information. Its help page says Available information excludes data logs; the specific-types option can include them and lets you select categories such as photos or messages. Consequently, an option that sounds broad should still be checked against the categories you need. Source: information available to download.
Meta currently allows up to 30 days to email an export link and gives a four-day download window once it is ready. Use the status and dates shown in your own account. Source: export availability.
HTML and JSON change how records are represented
When HTML and JSON are offered, choose based on how you intend to use the records. HTML is convenient for browsing linked pages. JSON exposes structured values that software can process. Neither name is a video resolution, an image quality setting or a promise of extra account history.
A 2022 study by van Driel and colleagues examined 110 Instagram data-download packages from 102 adolescents. The researchers documented differences between package structures over time, including HTML and JSON presentations and media stored separately from accompanying text. That is historical evidence of variation, not a directory specification for every current account. Promises and Pitfalls of Social Media Data Donations.
This has a practical consequence: keep the extracted folder tree intact while inspecting it. Moving one HTML page away from its related files can break relative links. Seeing text in a JSON record does not establish that a referenced image or video is present. An importer written for an old folder layout may need an update even if the archive itself opens normally.
The study also reported 13 incomplete packages. Missing or unreadable parts could involve collection and upload problems, so this is not an Instagram export failure rate. Our practical inference is to distinguish the package Meta produced from the copy later extracted, transferred or imported.
For people building an importer, JSON arrays are ordered but object members are not ordered by the JSON standard. Preserve an explicit media sequence where one exists; do not infer carousel order from an object's key order or an alphabetical filename listing. The meaning of Instagram's fields still has to be established separately. Source: RFC 8259.
A seven-file folder can still be missing an item
Here is our constructed example. Suppose your own list contains three posts: a three-photo carousel, a single video and another three-photo carousel. That means three post records and seven intended media items. These labels and filenames are invented for the explanation; they are not Instagram's export schema.
| Your reference list | Intended media | Present matching files | Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post A: three-photo carousel | 3 | 3 | All three expected positions present |
| Post B: one video | 1 | 1 | Video present; a cover image is additional |
| Post C: three-photo carousel | 3 | 2 | Third expected position missing |
| Total | 7 | 6 | One intended media item is unaccounted for |
Now add the video's cover JPEG. The folder contains seven files, exactly the number of media items you expected. A raw file count would appear to pass, even though the cover is extra and the third image in Post C is absent. Counting post records would miss a different problem: one carousel record can represent several files.
The test you need is a match between expected items and corresponding files, with previews classified separately. Even that is only the next stage: a present file may still be unreadable, cropped differently or associated with the wrong record.
Inspect the constructed example and its calculated counts. It contains no real Instagram identifiers or user data.
Check an archive in four passes
- ScopeWhat did you request?
- RecordsWhich posts or events are listed?
- FilesDoes each intended item open?
- ContextCan you explain dates and associations?
1. Keep the request and downloaded package together
Record the profile, categories, date interval, format, quality option and request/download dates. Keep the original package unchanged and inspect an extracted working copy. If your export supplies several downloads, inventory each one before deciding something is absent. Avoid combining unrelated export requests into one folder without recording which package supplied each file.
2. Check records against a small reference list
Choose items you can identify independently: an older post, a recent post, a carousel and a video, where applicable. For each, record what you expected and what the export actually contains. This is a spot check, not a statistical estimate of the entire account's completeness. Seven successful examples do not prove that an eighth item exists.
3. Open the corresponding media
For a carousel, check each position. For a video, play the actual saved video and check duration, orientation and sound. A cover JPEG is not a video backup. For photos, compare the relevant crop and dimensions. Our browser-only media inspector reads dimensions and file size locally; it does not establish that the file matches your pre-upload original.
Keep camera originals, editing projects and exported platform copies distinguishable. A media-quality setting affects what you request, but the setting name alone cannot establish byte-for-byte equality with the file you originally uploaded. That requires a direct comparison with the original you still hold.
4. Preserve the relationship between files and context
Keep captions, dates and item associations alongside the files when they are present in the records you receive. Before converting timestamps, establish the field's meaning, units and timezone. A posting time, a message time, an export time and a filesystem modification time describe different events. Extraction or copying can change filesystem dates without changing the date represented inside a record.
If you make a second backup, a matching cryptographic hash can establish that two files have identical bytes. It does not prove that Instagram included every post, that a date is correct, or that you may republish the content. Treat integrity, completeness and permission as separate checks.

How to investigate a missing item
Classify the finding before requesting another export. This avoids repeating a request with the same unsuitable settings.
| Finding | Check first | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| Expected category absent | Chosen profile and selected information types | Compare the request scope with your reference list |
| A record exists but its media does not open | Other supplied packages, extraction, file path and actual file presence | Distinguish a broken link from a missing file; retain the original package |
| File opens but looks different | Dimensions, crop, requested quality and the original comparison file | Compare the same item rather than its thumbnail |
| Dates appear shifted | Timestamp meaning, units, timezone and viewer conversion | Preserve the original value before correcting an interpretation |
| An unsent message is missing | Whether it was unsent | Do not treat the export as a recovery service for unsent messages |
Instagram explicitly says data downloads exclude messages you have unsent. Source: Meta's unsend documentation. Storage retained for safety purposes is also not a promise of user-accessible recovery; Meta notes that some deleted information does not appear in an export. Source: export documentation.
If scope and local extraction do not explain the gap, use Instagram's own help route. Describe the selected profile, request date, settings and missing category. Share the minimum necessary information through an appropriate support channel rather than posting an entire archive publicly.
