Why Does My Downloaded Instagram Photo or Video Look Different?
Compare the downloaded file itself with the same post at a similar display size. A thumbnail, a zoomed browser preview and the saved file may look different even when the download is correct. Pixel dimensions are useful evidence; a label such as HD is not a measurement.

Choose an image or video from your device to read its dimensions, aspect ratio and file size. Nothing is uploaded. Use the same item when comparing two downloads; dimensions alone do not establish copyright or visual quality.
Compare width and height together
A 1080 × 1350 portrait and a 1080 × 1080 square share a width but have different crops and pixel counts. Inspect your saved file’s information panel. Compare like with like: the same carousel item, orientation and crop. Comparing a square preview with a portrait original can hide a substantial part of the image.
Choose among the variants actually offered
For photos with several available sizes, select the dimensions that suit your use. Reducing a 1080 × 1350 image to 540 × 675 halves each dimension and leaves one quarter of the pixels. Enlarging the smaller file later cannot reconstruct the removed detail. A larger file size in bytes is not, by itself, proof of a better image.
Distinguish the thumbnail from the media
The picture shown beside a video is just its cover. When you download the video, open the MP4 itself to check the picture and sound. A sharp-looking thumbnail does not tell you how the saved video will look.
For video, check playback as well as resolution
Play the saved MP4 in a compatible viewer. Check movement, orientation and sound with volume enabled. Two videos with the same dimensions can differ in bitrate, compression and audio. A higher-resolution option does not add missing sound. If only a JPG is offered, it should be treated as an image result, not renamed to MP4.
When you need the original
For editing, printing or preserving the creator’s master, ask for the pre-upload file or use your own stored original. A download tool supplies a delivered variant; it does not reverse platform processing. Keep an untouched copy before cropping, resizing or sending through another service.
