Should I Download Reels in Instagram or Use DownSta?

By DownSta · Updated October 29, 2026.

If a Reel has a Download button in Instagram and you just want a copy on your phone, start there. DownSta offers a browser workflow for authorized public media, including when you are working on a computer.

Try Instagram's Download button first

Open the Reel in the Instagram app, open its sharing menu and look for Download. If the option is there, you can save without copying the link into another site. Save, the bookmark action, is different: it keeps an entry inside Instagram rather than giving you a separate video file.

Availability depends on the account and Reel. Meta says creators can control downloads, private-account Reels cannot be downloaded through this feature, and downloads are off by default for public accounts belonging to people under 18. Its help page lists the feature for mobile devices rather than computers. Instagram's Reel download settings.

A missing button is not a reason to override the creator's choice. For your own work, use your original video or account export; for someone else's, ask them for a copy if downloads are restricted.

The practical benefit of DownSta is choosing and saving available media in your browser. It does not turn a compressed Instagram video into the camera original, remove a logo embedded in the picture or generate a higher resolution. If two methods offer different-looking files, compare the actual saved videos rather than their preview pictures. Our quality guide explains dimensions and file checks.

Will the music be included?

Meta says original audio can be included when the Reel containing it is downloadable. Do not assume every song heard inside Instagram will be in the saved copy. The native download also includes attribution, and Meta says those downloads are not for commercial use. Meta's download and audio notes.

With DownSta, sound comes from the available video file. We do not add a missing song or extract a separate audio track. After saving, play the file with your device unmuted and check the section where you expected sound. If it is silent, repeatedly downloading the same file will not add a soundtrack. See our Reel audio guide for playback checks.

Which method fits your situation?

To use DownSta, copy the Reel link, paste it on the homepage, select Download, then download the video result. The cover image is not the video. Check the saved picture and sound before closing the page.

Neither method transfers ownership of someone else's work. If your goal is reposting or commercial use, agree that with the creator and check the music rights too. Our reposting guide explains the questions to resolve before publishing.
